Types of Therapy from clinical psychologist

As a Clinical Psychologist, Dr Simone Peters draws upon a range of psychological models and therapy approaches to develop a support plan that is tailored to your individual needs.

Dr Simone Peters says:

I believe that understanding more about ourselves and our experiences leads to better wellbeing.

I also believe that each of us has the capacity to grow and recover from difficult experiences, but that we sometimes need guidance and support with this along the way.

During my psychologist training, the therapies I have been most drawn to and which I currently offer include:

  • Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Mindfulness Based Approaches

For me, the shared features of these approaches is their attention to an integrated mind and body approach, and the belief that by increasing insight into the themes of our thoughts, emotions and actions, we can identify any patterns causing us distress or holding us back.

From here, we can then explore, develop or reconnect with knowledge and skills to help us develop new patterns.

I have found these approaches to be the most aligned with my own values, outlook and therapeutic style; a factor I believe is vital in helping me offer the best possible service to clients.

Similarly, it is really important that you are able to find a therapist and therapy that feel like the best fit for you personally.

Therefore, the approach I recommend from the list above depends upon the individual needs you have, your life circumstances and preferences.

Sometimes, I recommend drawing exclusively on one approach; sometimes I suggest integrating elements of the different therapies for the best outcome.

Duration of Therapy- How long can therapy last?

I offer short or long term work depending on your goals.

You may be looking for long term support to explore a range of difficulties you have been experiencing for some time, or you may be looking for a short term focussed piece of work on a specific issue.

I would work with you to determine the type and length of therapy that is likely to be best.

Therapy overview – What are the common stages of psychological therapy?

Over the years, the therapy process I have found to be the most supportive and effective is:

  • Assessment – an initial assessment session to explore the reasons you are coming to therapy and what you would like to be different in your life.  I will ask questions about your life history and current situation, and from this develop an initial formulation of how and why the issues developed. I will explain how I would work with such issues and if it seems my approach would be suitable for you, we will work together to develop a detailed understanding of your needs and agree a treatment plan.
  • Resourcing – after assessment it is sometimes useful to spend a few sessions developing coping skills or resources that you can start using straight away.  This may be to help you cope with strong emotions you are experiencing or to help you manage the therapy process more generally. While the goal of therapy is often to feel better about some aspect of your life, the therapy process can be challenging and if you’ve been avoiding something painful for a while, sometimes things ‘get worse before they get better’, so it’s good to have some strategies to help with this.
  • Intervention – after resourcing, we will start working directly on the issues you are seeking therapy for.
  • Review – after our agreed period of work has come to an end or you feel you have come as far as you want to in therapy, it can be helpful to have a review session to prepare for the future. This might be planning how you want to cope with any future challenges, what to do if difficulties re-occur, identifying other areas it may be helpful to work on in the future, or simply what’s going to help you to keep going with the changes you’ve made.   I will talk to you about what to expect after therapy and signpost you to any resources that will continue to support you.
