Dr Alan Hebben-Wadey is a highly experienced Clinical Psychologist in Eastbourne, therapist, clinical lecturer, trainer and supervisor. He offers face-to-face appointments in Eastbourne and online appointments.
He has more than 20 years’ experience working in psychology and mental health and qualified as a Clinical Psychologist in 2011.
Alan works with individuals, couples and families experiencing psychological distress, relationship difficulties, trauma and complex life circumstances. He has particular expertise in helping people with trauma and post-traumatic stress and in supporting people experiencing the psychological effects of long-term health conditions and other physical health difficulties.
His approach combines evidence-based psychological therapy with warmth, authenticity and practical guidance. Alan works collaboratively, tailoring therapy to each person’s experiences, circumstances, needs and goals.
He aims to provide a respectful therapeutic environment in which people can feel understood, develop greater insight and make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.
Alan works with people experiencing a wide range of psychological, emotional, relationship and health-related difficulties. These include:
He is also experienced in helping people whose difficulties are complex or interconnected. For example, emotional distress may occur alongside physical health problems, relationship or family pressures, difficulties at work or significant changes in a person’s life.
As a Clinical Psychologist, Alan can consider these different areas together and develop an individual psychological understanding of what may be contributing to the difficulties and what might help.
Dr Alan Hebben-Wadey has substantial experience helping people who have experienced trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other highly distressing circumstances.
Traumatic experiences can affect mood, sleep, relationships, physical wellbeing and a person’s sense of safety. Some people experience intrusive memories, nightmares, avoidance, guilt, shame, anxiety or a feeling of being constantly on alert.
Alan works carefully and collaboratively, helping clients understand the effects of trauma and develop safer and more flexible ways of responding to difficult memories, emotions and situations.
Where appropriate, he may use Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, (EMDR), alongside other evidence-based psychological approaches.
Alan has particular expertise in Clinical Health Psychology and in understanding the complex relationship between between physical health, emotional wellbeing and quality of life.
He spent many years working in specialist NHS services supporting people living with persistent pain, diabetes, cardiac conditions, neurological disorders and other long-term or complex health conditions.
Living with a physical health condition can affect many areas of life. People may experience anxiety, low mood, uncertainty, changes in independence, difficulties adjusting to treatment, relationship pressures or a loss of confidence in their body.
Alan helps people understand how physical symptoms, thoughts, emotions, behaviour, relationships and quality of life can influence one another.
Therapy may help people adjust to changes in their health, manage difficult thoughts and emotions, cope with medical treatment and reconnect with relationships and activities that matter to them.
Alan’s therapeutic approach is compassionate, pragmatic and collaborative.
He draws on a range of evidence-based psychological therapies, including:
Clinical Psychologists are trained to understand difficulties from several psychological perspectives. This allows Alan to integrate different approaches where appropriate and develop therapy around the individual rather than expecting the individual to fit a single therapeutic model.
Alan will discuss his understanding of the difficulties with each client and agree a therapeutic plan with them. The approach used will depend on the person’s experiences, preferences, goals and current circumstances.
Alan aims to create a therapeutic relationship that is warm, thoughtful, practical and professionally supportive.
He recognises that beginning therapy can feel daunting, particularly when someone is experiencing intense distress or discussing difficult experiences for the first time. He works at a pace that takes account of each person’s needs and readiness for change, combining empathy and careful listening with practical psychological guidance.
