Our Approach: Professional and Compassionate

We take care to make each assessment professional, respectful, and at a comfortable pace.
Our clinicians balance objectivity and compassion, creating space for clients to speak openly while maintaining the independence required of expert witnesses.
Any report produced will be based on the clinical psychologists’ objective professional opinion and therefore it may not always align with your/your clients views, expectations or desired outcome.
We are trained in trauma-informed assessment, ensuring sensitivity to clients’ experiences while producing clear, defensible, and timely reports.
Quality and Training
All our Clinical Psychologists are HCPC-registered and experienced in expert witness report writing.
Dr Jurai Darongkamas and several colleagues have completed Bond Solon Expert Witness Training.
Our reports adhere to court requirements and psychological best practice, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and professionalism.

Frequently Asked Questions about Medico-Legal Psychological Assessments and Psychology Expert Witness Reports
Medico-Legal Psychological Assessment FAQs
Below are answers to common questions about medico-legal psychological assessments and psychology expert witness reports in the UK, including reports for personal injury, CICA claims, PTSD, immigration and asylum cases, employment tribunals, military or AFCS-related matters, pre-surgery assessments, Blue Badge applications, universities and other formal decision-making processes.
What is a medico-legal psychological assessment?
A medico-legal psychological assessment is a specialist psychological assessment prepared for legal, court, tribunal, compensation, immigration, employment, regulatory or other formal decision-making purposes. It usually includes a clinical interview, review of relevant documents and a written report giving an independent professional opinion on the psychological questions being asked.
What is a psychology expert witness report?
A psychology expert witness report is an independent report prepared by a suitably qualified psychologist for use in legal proceedings or another formal process. It may address psychological injury, diagnosis, causation, prognosis, treatment needs, risk, functional impact, capacity-related questions or other matters requested by a court, solicitor, tribunal, organisation, insurer or other instructing party. The instructing party may include the person being assessed, particularly where they are acting as a litigant in person.
Who provides your medico-legal psychology reports?
Our medico-legal psychology reports are prepared by HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologists with experience in psychological assessment, diagnosis, formulation and expert report writing. Dr Jurai Darongkamas and several colleagues have completed Bond Solon Expert Witness Report Writing Training.
Can a Clinical Psychologist provide a report for court?
Yes. A suitably experienced HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologist can provide a psychological report for court where the questions fall within their professional expertise.
Reports may also be provided where a psychological assessment has been ordered or requested by a court, tribunal, solicitor, insurer, organisation or other instructing party.
Reports may be used in civil, family, criminal, immigration, employment, regulatory, compensation or tribunal proceedings. The psychologist’s role is to give a neutral, evidence-based clinical opinion within their area of expertise. The report is not written to argue for either side.
What can a medico-legal psychological report cover?
A medico-legal psychological report can address the psychological impact of an event or series of events, diagnosis where appropriate, causation, prognosis, treatment recommendations and functional impact. This may include effects on work, study, travel, driving, relationships, daily functioning, emotional wellbeing, risk, vulnerability or ability to engage with legal or formal processes.
Do you provide psychological assessments for personal injury claims?
Yes. We provide personal injury psychology expert witness reports for cases involving road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, assaults, medical trauma, psychological injury, PTSD, anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties and other trauma-related presentations.
Can you provide a psychological report for a road traffic accident claim?
Yes. We provide psychological assessments and expert witness reports following road traffic accidents. A report may consider the psychological impact of the accident, whether symptoms are consistent with PTSD, anxiety, depression or travel-related distress, and how the accident has affected daily functioning, work, driving, travel and quality of life.
Do you provide CICA psychological reports?
Yes. We provide psychological reports for Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority applications. These assessments may consider the psychological impact of violent crime, abuse, assault, trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression, functional impact and treatment needs.
Can you assess PTSD for legal or compensation purposes?
Yes. Our Clinical Psychologists can assess symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder for medico-legal, personal injury, CICA, employment, immigration, military, veteran and court-related matters. The assessment may consider symptoms, diagnosis, causation, prognosis, functional impact and treatment recommendations.
Do you provide immigration and asylum psychological reports?
Yes. We provide psychological assessments and reports for immigration and asylum cases. These may address trauma, mental health, vulnerability, risk, psychological impact of past experiences, treatment needs and the possible impact of uncertainty, detention, displacement or removal on psychological wellbeing.
Do you provide psychological reports for employers about someone’s mental health?
Yes. Where appropriate, we can provide psychological reports for workplace or employer-related matters. These may address mental health, functional impact, fitness for work, work-related stress, reasonable adjustments, disability-related issues, risk, treatment needs and recommendations for support. The purpose and limits of the report would need to be agreed in advance, including consent, confidentiality and who will receive the report.
Do you provide reports for employment tribunals and workplace matters?
Yes. We provide psychological reports for employment tribunals and workplace-related matters, including work-related stress, trauma, discrimination, bullying, harassment, disability, fitness for work, reasonable adjustments, psychological injury and the impact of workplace experiences on mental health.
Can you provide psychological reports for fitness to practise hearings?
Yes. We provide psychological assessments for fitness to practise matters involving professional bodies such as the SRA, HCPC, GMC and other regulators. Reports may address mental health, risk, insight, treatment engagement, prognosis, fitness to work and recommendations for support, rehabilitation or reasonable adjustments.
Do you provide military, veteran, AFCS or War Pension psychological reports?
Yes. We can provide psychological assessments and reports for military and veteran-related matters, including Armed Forces Compensation Scheme claims, War Pension Scheme matters, military personnel pension-related psychological questions and applications where a psychological opinion is required. The AFCS compensates for injury, illness or death caused by service on or after 6 April 2005; applicants do not need to know whether AFCS or the War Pension Scheme applies before making a claim.
Can you provide a psychological report for an Armed Forces application?
Where appropriate, we can provide psychological assessment reports for military or Armed Forces application-related questions. These reports may address current psychological functioning, history of mental health difficulties, treatment engagement, risk, resilience, functional impact and recommendations. The final decision about suitability or eligibility rests with the relevant military, pension, compensation or decision-making body.
Do you provide forensic or risk assessment reports?
Yes, where the question falls within the psychologist’s expertise. Risk-focused psychological assessments may consider psychological functioning, trauma history, emotional regulation, personality factors, offending-related needs, protective factors and recommendations for intervention or risk management. Where a forensic psychologist or psychiatrist is more appropriate, we will advise accordingly.
Are your psychological assessments available online?
Yes. Many medico-legal psychological assessments can be completed online using secure video appointments. In-person assessments may also be available depending on clinical suitability, the person’s needs, the legal context and location.
How long does a medico-legal psychological assessment take?
The length of the assessment depends on the complexity of the case and the questions to be addressed. Many assessments take between one and three hours, although more complex cases may require longer appointments, additional document review or more than one meeting.
What documents are needed for a medico-legal psychology report?
The documents required depend on the case type. Relevant documents may include a letter of instruction, GP records, mental health records, hospital records, witness statements, accident reports, employment records, previous expert reports, legal pleadings, tribunal documents, immigration papers, military or Veterans UK correspondence, pension documents or court directions.
Will the psychologist’s report support my case?
The psychologist’s role is to provide an independent and objective professional opinion. This means the report may not always support the client’s preferred outcome or expectations. The opinion will be based on the assessment, available evidence, clinical expertise and the psychologist’s professional judgement.
How much does a medico-legal psychological assessment cost?
Fees vary because each person’s circumstances, history, documentation and legal questions are different. Recent medico-legal psychology quotes have typically been in the range of £775 to £960. Some straightforward cases may cost less than £775, while more complex cases may cost more.
Many reports involve several hundred pounds in total charges and are often below £1,000, although more complex cases may cost more.
Psychologists associated with this network charge only for the professional time actually used. The total fee may depend on the length of the assessment, the volume of records to review, the complexity of the psychological history, the number of questions in the letter of instruction, and whether additional work such as liaison, addendum reports or court attendance is needed.
How long does it take to receive the psychology report?
Report turnaround times vary depending on clinician availability, case complexity, document volume and any legal deadlines. We aim to agree timescales before accepting instructions and can often offer assessments with relatively short turnaround times where suitable.
Do you provide therapy linked to legal proceedings?
. This may include therapy following psychological injury or personal injury claims, including cases being managed through the Official Injury Claim process where appropriate. Where suitable, therapy progress reports may also be provided, usually following discussion with the client and any relevant instructing party. To avoid a potential conflict of interest, the psychologist providing an expert witness report would normally not be the same psychologist providing subsequent treatment.
Is a medico-legal assessment confidential?
A medico-legal assessment is different from a private therapy session. Information shared during the assessment may be included in the report if it is relevant to the legal or clinical questions being addressed. The limits of confidentiality will be explained before the assessment begins.
Can solicitors instruct your Clinical Psychologists directly?
Yes. Solicitors, legal representatives, organisations, courts, insurers, case managers and individuals can contact National Clinical Psychology Service to discuss medico-legal psychological assessments and expert witness reports. Enquiries and instructions should be made through this website or by emailing ncps@clinicalpsychologyservice.co.uk.
Where formal legal proceedings are involved, a clear letter of instruction is usually required. After an enquiry is received, NCPS can consider which psychologist associated with the network may be suitable for the assessment, depending on the issues raised, expertise required, availability and any relevant deadlines.
Do you provide pre-surgery or fitness for surgery psychological reports?
Yes. We can provide psychological assessments and reports where a psychological opinion is requested before surgery or medical treatment. This may include assessment before procedures such as mastectomy, reconstructive surgery or other planned surgery, where relevant. The assessment may consider mental health, expectations, psychological readiness, capacity to engage with the treatment process, risk factors, support needs and recommendations. The final decision about surgery or treatment remains with the relevant medical team.
Do you provide psychological reports for Blue Badge applications?
Where appropriate, we can provide psychological reports for disability-related applications, including Blue Badge applications. A report may consider psychological functioning, mobility-related anxiety, trauma, panic, ND related issues, functional impact, daily living difficulties and the way mental health affects a person’s ability to travel or access the community. The final decision rests with the relevant local authority or decision-making body.
Do you provide psychological reports for universities or educational settings?
Yes. We can provide psychological reports for universities, colleges or other educational settings where a formal psychological opinion is required. Reports may address mental health, functional impact, risk, support needs, reasonable adjustments, interruption of studies, fitness to study or the psychological impact of specific events.
Do you provide psychological reports for the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme?
Yes. Where appropriate, we can provide psychological assessments and reports for veterans or former service personnel applying to the LGBT Financial Recognition Scheme or related processes. These reports may consider the psychological impact of discrimination, dismissal, discharge, investigation, bullying, trauma, shame, loss of career, relationship impact, mental health difficulties and treatment needs.
Do you provide reports for criminal court, offending or risk-related matters?
Yes, where the questions fall within the psychologist’s expertise. We can provide psychological assessments for criminal court, criminal justice, offending-related and risk-focused matters. These may consider psychological functioning, trauma history, emotional regulation, personality factors, risk, protective factors, treatment needs and recommendations for intervention or risk management. Where a Forensic Psychologist or Psychiatrist is more appropriate, we will advise accordingly.
We also consider other medico-legal psychological report requests on a case-by-case basis.
